Sunburst’s self-titled album is an elusive piece of Japanese jazz fusion combining electric keyboards, fluid guitar work, warm brass and Latin-influenced rhythms. The group balances mellow, atmospheric passages with tightly arranged jazz-funk grooves, including “Gentle Talk” and an elegant interpretation of Herbie Hancock’s “Maiden Voyage.” Its polished ensemble playing and breezy yet sophisticated sound make it an appealing discovery for collectors of obscure Japanese fusion, coastal jazz and early-1980s groove. |
